What Wormhole stores and sends

Wormhole has no analytics or crash reporting, and no account. Settings and saved terminal output stay on your Mac. The updater asks our download server whether there's a new version and downloads it from GitHub, where the releases are published.

Wormhole contacts the download server to check for updates and download new versions. Requests include the app version, and the server receives your IP address. They do not include an account ID, terminal output or repository contents. On the Unstable channel a check reads two update lists from the same server instead of one. New versions are downloaded from GitHub, where Wormhole's releases are published, so GitHub receives your IP address when an update downloads.

Before installing an update, Wormhole verifies the download's signature and the app's macOS code signature. Turn off Update automatically in Settings → Updates to stop background checks and installation. You can still check manually from Wormhole → Check for Updates…

Wormhole stores its app data in ~/Library/Application Support/Wormhole. Agent-hook files and worktrees live outside this folder. The app data includes:

  • your settings (config.json)
  • your windows and terminals, in a local database
  • the last 2,000 lines of each terminal's output, in a file of its own (scrollback.db), encrypted with a key in your login Keychain. It is whatever programs printed, secrets included. Turn off Restore terminal text after restart in Settings → Terminal to stop saving it and erase what's saved
  • themes, fonts and icon themes you add
  • log files from the last seven days

Installing status hooks in Settings → Coding agents changes the agent's configuration files. Wormhole backs up existing files before editing them. Remove hooks removes Wormhole's entries.

Status hooks report events over a local connection restricted to your user account. Coding agents and other programs running in your terminals have their own network access and data policies.
